Monday, April 27

Today we heard the rest of our student presentations. Nice job!

I collected the textbooks today. If you want your evaluation tomorrow, you need to give me your book first.

Tomorrow we will do a listening and speaking activity and then I will pass out your evaluations.

Monday, April 20

Today my brother, Michael Betts, came to our class as a guest speaker. We interviewed him and took the open book quiz.

For homework, listen to a news source (t.v. news, CNN.com, or another you choose) either on line or on t.v. for 10 minutes and answer the questions that I passed out in class. If you listen to something on line, please include the URL.

Tuesday, April 14

We heard oral presentations from more classmates today. If you have not given your presentation yet, please keep it between 5-10 minutes or we will not have enough time for all students to present.

My brother will come to class next Monday as our guest speaker. You will interview him. Please write 8 questions to ask him. I will collect these questions.

Monday, April 13

Today we heard presentations from some students. The rest of the class took notes in order to be ready for our open book quiz next Monday.

Then, we watched a clip from YouTube of 'John and Kate Plus 8,' where a married couple has an argument. We watched a few times and discussed both in partners and as a class what they were saying. We tried to pay attention to intonation and register patterns.

Tuesday, April 7

Today we did a pronunciation warm up, and then a listening activity to help us distinguish between main idea and details.

Then, we talked about our oral presentations.  Each student will do a 5 minute presentation.  Some students in their second 7 weeks of level 3 who need to use the smart cart will do their presentations this coming Monday, April 13.  Other students will do theirs without a smart cart on Tuesday, April 14.  The rest of the students in the first 7 weeks of level 3 will do their presentations on Monday, April 27.  The reason for the long time between presentations is that smart carts are not available.

Also, we will have a guest speaker on Monday, April 20.

At the end of class students filled out evaluation forms about their teacher.

Monday, April 6

Today we started discussing Chapter 6, "What Do You Mean," about communication differences between men and women.  We found that our class is very diverse in our communication styles.  We also played the psychodrama interview game.  I heard good questions and good suggestions for answers.

If you have not done the homework assignment that was due today, please look at the post from Tuesday, March 31, answer the questions in writing, and give them to me tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 31

Carolyn McCoy will sub for me today.  I am sorry to miss class, but I will be at a funeral.  You will take your vocabulary quiz on pages 93-94 and then work on chapter 5 with Carolyn.

Homework:
You will hear an interview with Michelle, a woman from Canada who now lives abroad.  She is speaking about culture shock:  the difficulty we experience adjusting to a new culture.

Listen to the .mp3 file here.

Then write the answer to the questions.  Write in complete sentences please.  Use a capital, subject, verb, and period.  I will collect them on Monday, April 6.  Please do not email me the answers.

1.  Where does Michelle live now? How long has she been there?
2. Is she totally used to the new culture?
3. What's one example of something she still struggles with?
4. What happened when she went back to Canada the first time after living abroad?
5. What did the interviewer, Joel, notice when he went back to the U.S. after living in Asia?
6. What does Michelle think she'll miss most about Japan when she leaves?
